History of the S.P.A.R. The town of Rimouski was not equipped with a municipal pound. Following an agreement with the S.P.A. Quebec, a "Rimouski" division was founded. In 1982, the "Société Protectrice des Animaux" is established in the area in order to protect, control and offer a refuge for the abandoned animals and to answer the complaints of animal cruelty in the Rimouski-Gaspesie sector. It was the first pound in the region. For financial reasons, the S.P.A. closes its doors on September 1, 1999. It was at that moment that Mr. Denis Poirier, employee of the S.P.A. for more than 10 years, decided to continue the activities under the name "Services aux Petits Animaux de Rimouski" (S.P.A.R.). The mission remains the same; to save the animals and offer them a new home. The S.P.A.R. remain the appointed pound of the city and serves the surrounding municipalities. From that day, Mr. Denis Poirier and his spouse Mrs. Linda Lamontagne have continued their mandate with the collaboration of Sebastien Côté, employee of the kennel and Marie-Josée Landry, (volunteer) responsible for documentation. |
